Japanese college installs 27 DaVinci Resolve Studio licenses for broadcast engineering curriculum.
Fremont, CA, USA - Blackmagic Design today announced that TOHO GAKUEN Media Training College, a school focused on nurturing professionals for the entertainment industry, has adopted 27 licenses of DaVinci Resolve Studio as part of its post production curriculum.
TOHO GAKUEN Media Training College is part of the TOHO GAKUEN Group, which is comprised of multiple institutions specializing in training for the entertainment industry, including video, audio, and performing arts. The college offers hands on education in television and radio program production and has already integrated a number of Blackmagic Design products into its classes.
The college’s Broadcast Engineering Department launched a DaVinci Resolve class in 2024 and installed DaVinci Resolve Studio on 27 laptops accordingly.

“We have produced many professionals who are now working in TV broadcasting post production,” said Yuki Matsumoto, Chief of the Media College Department. “These days, post production professionals are expected to not only have editing skills, but also the ability to handle grading and a wide range of tasks. We were looking for software that could handle all of these needs. I personally found DaVinci Resolve to be easy to use, and with more and more broadcasters adopting it, we decided to implement it. The flexibility to handle both online and offline editing was also a major factor.”
The laptops are permanently installed in classrooms and are freely available to students, with loan options also offered for those who need them. Many students also install the free version of DaVinci Resolve on their personal computers, allowing them to use the software at home. The free version is well equipped with essential features and is highly rated by students.
In the classroom, students learn editing and grading throughout a semester. For their final assignment, they edit and grade freely using pre prepared log footage.

While students do not shoot their own footage in this class, DaVinci Resolve is used in many other classes as well. For example, in the Drama Techniques class students learn about DIT workflows using DaVinci Resolve, including media management and basic color theory with their own footage. In the Color Grading class, students use their own footage to learn how to craft looks and styles. The school has also adopted DaVinci Resolve Advanced Panel and DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel control panels to support student productions.
Furthermore, during the school’s 2024 sports season, the Blackmagic Replay system was used to record the event, utilizing DaVinci Resolve Studio, DaVinci Resolve Replay Editor, Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2 camera, ATEM 2 M/E Constellation HD live production switcher, Blackmagic Cloud Dock 2 network storage device, HyperDeck Studio HD Pro broadcast deck, and UltraStudio 4K Mini capture and playback device.
Takashi Sugimoto from the Educational Affairs and Education Department shared: “This was our first time recording for the sporting event. Students requested the ability to generate slow motion replays, and a volunteer team of students took the lead in capturing, editing, and even producing highlights. Normally, equipment that generates replay video is expensive even when rented, so it is not available for students. However, Blackmagic Design allow us to build a replay system inexpensively by combining existing equipment, allowing students to experience it for themselves. Despite the short preparation period, they quickly got the hang of the operation, and the final result was very well received.”
Matsumoto concluded: “Currently, we teach editing and color, but in the future, we plan to add Fusion to the curriculum. Once students become proficient in editing with DaVinci Resolve, they’ll be able to share projects within the class using Blackmagic Cloud and practice shooting with Blackmagic Camera. With so many powerful tools from Blackmagic Design, we can keep expanding what students learn. DaVinci Resolve Studio in particular is packed with AI powered features that I believe outperform other software. In the future, we also want to incorporate those AI capabilities into our teaching,”
